Youth Justice Awareness Month (YJAM)
was started in 2016 to support youth activities in raising awareness about the outcome of juvenile delinquency and ways to reform or circumvent its activation. Several initiatives by the Departments of Justice and Education provided support for reducing long-term psychological impact to students who may have made mistakes prior to the age of 18 to avoid life-long repayment. Experiences and ideas shared by youth has become a celebrated way to navigate and eradicate detrimental exposure and experiences for tweens and teens.
National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) was started in 1988 to raise awareness of the needs that persons with disabilities have – specifically in workplace environments. For youth (tweens and teens) seeking equitable employment, it is imperative that business owners and leaders understand the needs of those who may need accommodations in the workplace and what potential candidates’ “disabilities” entail – as another common finding is that leaders tend to assign the same needs to employees of a certain group (such as neurodivergent), misunderstanding that these may vary widely per person. One study shows that while 25% of employees report they have a disability, company leaders only reported 4%-7%. Leaders can learn by listening – this month is a prime time to catch up!
